Why is the death pool named after Lawton Chiles?
In a bitter fight for Jai-Alai reform, the stress of keeping the local Florida frontons in business cost the former Florida governor his life in 1998. A month after he died, Lawton Chiles sent the 3 members of the Jai-Alai Council (Jason L., Mike B. and Justin G.) a letter thanking them for their support of Jai Alai. In closing, the governor reminded the Council "I am Lawton Chiles".
Stunned by his ability to write a letter a month after dying, the council started the death pool in Lawton Chiles honor.
